Thoughts on Beauty & Purpose

Thoughts on Beauty & Purpose

“All beauty is only reflection.  And whether I am conscious of it or not, any created thing of which I am amazed, it is the glimpse of His face to which I bow down.  Do I have eyes to see it’s Him and not the thing?”  Ann Voskamp.

With all my talk of beauty here lately, my search for beauty, my eyes scanning the images of Instagram, Pinterest, and the big wide world of blogs, this quote from Ann has lodged itself in my brain.  Am I remembering the purpose of it all?  He created beauty.  It all came from Him.  Why does a room with a few glowing lamps feel so inviting?  What is it about symmetry?  Bringing the outdoors in?  Texture, color, contrast?  I know that styles and trends change but there is something universal about it all, isn’t there?

Everything here is a shadow, a foretaste, a glimpse in a hazy mirror.  A reflection, like Ann said. When we experience joy, relish in gratitude, happen upon beauty that is so overwhelming, is it not just a reflection of a greater and more fulfilling Beauty?

Another inspiration of mine, Christy Nockels, wrote on her website shortly after her home was featured in Better Homes & Gardens, “What a gift to share my home, all to the glory of Jesus. My prayer was that every dot would be connected back to Him…the conversation, the sense of rest, the music I played, the food I served, the laughter, and even our dogs roaming around bringing smiles to everyone’s faces. All of it somehow reflecting the creativity of my Creator.”

That’s it, that’s the purpose… “every dot connected back to Jesus.”  Lord, may it be so, from the Ikea curtains, to the laundry piles, the gallery walls, and the Saturday morning pancakes.  Every dot.

Thanks for reading, Happy Monday.

A Big Boy Room

A Big Boy Room

Big Boy Room Moodboard

We still have pictures to hang and some accessories to add in, but this room in The Montgomery House is well on its way!  Since I have two boys of my own, I love doing little boy rooms.  Take a mix of plaids, stripes, textures, some different metals & wood, plus add in some antlers for this hunting family, and you’ve got a man-child room with lots of space to play.  The colors aren’t match-matchy so toys and stuffed animals fit right in.  We’ve got some storage on the other side of the room that you can’t see here but will be perfect for this little guy’s books and toys and it will all grow with him.  Can’t wait to show you more once its finished!

Like anything you see here? Would love for you to share it on Facebook or pin it to your Pinboards! There are links below. As always, thanks for reading! ❤

A Bright & Colorful Guestroom

A Bright & Colorful Guestroom

Hello there! Sorry, today I’m posting the darkest picture ever (but before pictures are supposed to be bad, right?).

IMG_7439This is my friend’s guest room.  Her style is so bright and fun and colorful, but of course we all have those rooms that just sort of get neglected.  When its the guest room that you rarely use it doesn’t really matter!  Her in-laws were coming to stay in just a couple of weeks though so we needed to do something quick to perk up this room and make it a more welcoming space.

Here’s the plan we came up with:

Guest Room Moodboard

She had the walls painted gray and we used my favorite Ikea Ritva curtains on the windows.  Floor to ceiling- makes a big big difference! Since we were short on time and wanted to make the most of the budget (don’t we always want to make the most of our budget??) we decided to keep all existing furniture and just update the bedding.  We also added some bright & meaningful art, including several pieces done by her kids!  We found new lamps, and added in a graphic rug.  The result, I think, is a whole lot of fun!  We’re calling it The Love Shack, you’ll see why. 🙂

Their sweet little dog was just hanging out here the whole time Paul was shooting.  Seems like she thinks its a cozy little room!

It doesn’t take a huge budget or even a huge overhaul to make a big difference.  What’s that one room in your house that needs a little LOVE? 🙂

Sharing my sweet baby number three’s nursery today…

Books are probably my favorite thing to decorate with. You’ll see I use them in most rooms I do. It’s an easy way to add color that’s not matchy-matchy and they just make a room feel alive- not like a showroom house, like a real home where people read and learn and live!

We DIYed the pelmets and hung Ikea curtains with blackout liners behind them. It’s been the perfect solution for those big windows and arches over the windows. This room gets DARK during the day.

The House of Figs- nursery The song 10,000 Reasons, by Matt Redman, was really special to us around the time I was pregnant with Will. It felt like the perfect thing for over his crib. And I wanted it to be a reminder for me when those inevitable early mornings and sleepless nights came… “whatever may pass and whatever lies before me, let me be singing…”

Will's Room_5 The ship painting below I found in a little antique store in downtown Houston. It was painted by the dealer’s father and there’s a little story about him taped to the back of the canvas!  The Lego W was made by Will’s big cousin.

Will's Room_3 Will's Room_2 The bedding is old and from my seven year old’s nursery but the sheet is new from Pottery Barn.

I removed the other more useful but not so pretty items for the pictures- like the monitor, the sound machine (those things are heaven-sent!!), the diaper genie, and the multitude of pacifiers everywhere, but of course we have those things too.  Below, you can find a list of more resources.
